In Measurement (slow-motion) I spend two weeks repeating a short performance at the Xiamen seaside. Every morning, I attempted to submerge myself under water for as long as possible while holding a selfie stick with a camera that pointed down at my hand. Because of the waves, I needed to buy a 10kg dumbbell from a local weightlifting shop to hold my body in place. The beach was quite busy, and after many tries, two women decided to photograph themselves while I was under water in the background, my hand lurking in between the waves like a submarine periscope. As a result, three kinds of image-making intersect: A near slapstick art-performance in which I attempt to use a selfie-stick with body is submerged beneath the sea, the making of an actual selfie, and an almost cinematic overview shot from the beach. The footage of approximately 15 seconds has been slowed down to about three minutes, transforming the video into a sequence of photographs that freeze the movement of the seawater in place, distorts the sounds of the busy beach and makes it seem as if I am holding my breath much longer than in actuality I am.
