In Passing, made in collaboration with choreographer Min Kyoung Lee, is an 11 minutes looped three-channel projection of synchronized super8, iPhone and HD digital footage. We documented a series of actions on the streets and around the houses of the Dongnimmun neighborhood in Seoul. The staged actions vary from game-like situations to gestures, running, and speaking. It becomes clear that the area, with which Lee has a personal relationship, is bound to change. But the images show a space that has not yet taken on its new form. On the contrary, it seems to be in between two timezones. The owners have left but no redevelopment has started. Meanwhile, elderly people get by, animals thrive and plants grow, keeping the area alive.
The interplay of Lee, her sisters and myself appearing in and around the image tell of our relationship to the space. Are we trespassers? Or does the rest of the city, modernization itself, trespass into the space?
